A student stands over a patient, needle poised. They have a “perfect” prescription: a textbook combination of points harvested from a lecture slide on chronic lower back pain. But as the needle meets the skin, the student hesitates - the symptom of a quiet habit that has taken hold of our profession. We routinely say we “prescribe” points. It sounds efficient. It echoes the authority of biomedical culture and fits neatly into the insurance field. But vocabulary is never neutral; repeated long enough, it dictates behavior.
Thirty-Sixth Member of Congress Signs on the Support HR 818
Maryland Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-8th District) has become the 36th co-sponsor of HR 818, the Federal Acupuncture Coverage Act of 2005. To date, representatives from 18 states and territories have agreed to co-sponsor HR 818, which, if passed, would amend Social Security Act to provide for coverage of qualified acupuncturist services under part B of the Medicare program, and amend title 5 of the United States Code to provide for coverage of such services under the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program.
