New Dean at PCOM
Pacific College of Oriental Medicine (PCOM) recently announced that Robert Damone, MS, LAc, has been named new academic dean of its San Diego campus. Damone has been teaching clinical and theoretical courses at PCOM for more than 15 years. In 1999, he served as the academic dean of PCOM's New York campus, and has served at the San Diego campus as chair of both the clinic and Oriental medicine departments. Over the past several years, Damone also has been teaching seminars internationally.
Damone is the author of Principles of Chinese Medical Andrology: An Integrated Approach to Male Urological and Reproductive Health. His other publications include Ten Lectures on Formulas From the Personal Experience ofJiao Shu-De and A Heart Approach to Gynecology: Essentials in Verse. He has published several review articles related to nutrition, dietary supplements and acupuncture.
Currently, Damone is working on using electrophysiology as an assessment tool to measure efficacy in acupuncture, and mind-body and physical medicines. He also has more than 19 years of experience as a practitioner of Chinese medicine. He reads medical Chinese and has studied Chinese medicine both in Taiwan as well as in mainland China.
AOMA Heads Study Trip to China
From Feb. 22 to March 28, 2009, the Academy of Oriental Medicine at Austin (AOMA) will be hosting a study tour to Chengdu University in China. Chengdu University offers a wide range of study opportunities in herbs, tuina, qigong and tai chi. Students will be able to select courses that best suit their interests. There will also be the opportunity to gain clinical experience under the supervision of the host teachers and professors. Translators will be on hand.
The trip will start with a one-week cultural tour of Beijing before heading to Chengdu, the capital city and the administrative, cultural, educational and industrial center of Sichuan province. An optional trip to Tibet from March 28 to April 4, 2009 is available immediately following the conclusion of the Chengdu study program. Both AOM students and the general public are welcome.

On Dec. 7, 2023, the World Health Organization (WHO) released its “Guideline for Non-Surgical Management of Chronic Primary Low Back Pain in Adults in Primary and Community Care Settings.” The purpose of the 244-page document is to “provide evidence-based recommendations on nonsurgical interventions for chronic primary LBP in adults” that will improve outcomes.
